Aboveground Tanks – Single Wall, Double Wall & Workbench

It is the responsibility of the installer to ensure that the following requirements are met. These are general installation instructions only. For specific details and regulations, you must refer to the appropriate codes and local regulations.
 
1.Tank Location
Tanks shall be located at a safe distance from property lines, public ways, buildings and adjacent tanks. Tanks should be protected from damage due to contact with normal vehicular traffic. Refer to applicable codes and local authorities.
 
2. Tank Base
Tanks must rest on a solid level foundation, preferably concrete, and must be able to support the tank assembly plus 110% liquid loading. This foundation should be designed to minimize the uneven settling of the tank and to minimize the corrosion of the components resting on the foundation. All organic material, i.e. sod or bark, should be removed and soil mechanically compacted prior to foundation being laid.
 
3. Lifting and Handling
All tank assemblies must only be lifted when empty.
Single & Double Wall Tanks- To lift unit, lifting lugs located on top of the tank must be used. Do not drop or use tank assembly to transport any product, or move the tank unless it is empty.
Workbench Tanks- Unit must be lifted from bottom either by forklift or by bottom supporting 4-point harness system.
 
4. Tank Venting
All tanks must be vented to prevent build up of pressure inside the tank when filling, emptying, or due to temperature changes.
Single & Double Wall Tanks- The normal vent must be equipped with a weatherproof hood of a design that will not result in flame impingement onto the surface of the tank in the event of vapour ignition. Both the normal and emergency vents must be installed on the primary tank. All other unused openings must be properly sealed with a liquid-tight plug.
Workbench - Tanks must be equipped with vent that functions as both normal & emergency vent per ULC S602.
 
5.Tank installer shall consult with the Authority having Jurisdiction to ensure that requirements of this standard & all Federal, Provincial & Local codes are met prior to installation.
 
6. Double Wall Tanks must maintain a minimum vacuum of 42kPa to ensure the leak tight condition of the tank. This should be monitored and inspected at regular intervals. Tanks are shipped to installation site with a minimum vacuum reading of 51 kPa.
 
7. The tank shall be inspected at regular intervals to ensure that all functions of the original installation remain operational. Any contamination (such as water) found in the tank shall be disposed of, in accordance with the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction. The paint coating and working parts of the tank should be inspected at least annually.
 
8. Any coating damage that is done during shipping and/or installation must be touched up with the proper coating. Contact manufacturer for information if required.
